Area runners compete at middle school state cross country meet

SAYDEL — Several younger area cross-country runners took the trip to Saydel on Saturday for the 17th Washburn Classic, also known as the Junior High State Meet, a competition open to all middle school aged runners throughout the state of Iowa.

Ottumwa, Davis County, Pekin and Sigourney all had teams of runners at the event, divided by class into boys and girls and by seventh and eighth grade. Davis County teams brought home three team titles while Pekin teams brought home two.

The Ottumwa eighth-grade boys team placed 11th overall in Class 4A, while the eighth-grade girls team placed 10th and the seventh-grade girls team placed 12th.

Ottumwa’s Collin McConnell came away with a ninth-place finish in eighth-grade boys, while Dalton Bowers placed sixth overall in the seventh-grade boys. The Ottumwa eighth-grade girls were led by Georgia Garrett and Rhiannon Hamm, who finished 27th and 28th. Ellen Carlson led the Ottumwa seventh-grade girls, placing 51st.

In Class 2A, the Davis County eighth-grade boys took the team title, led by a second-place finish by Sean Emmons. Zach Hougland, Ryan Snyder, Walker Henderson and Dane Stevenson all finished in the top 15 for Davis County. The seventh-grade team from Davis County of Trenton Goode, Doug Turner, Caleb Cowles and Dexter Davis also took the team title. The Davis County eighth-grade girls placed fifth, as Kalleigh Tharp and Sydney Spargur both placed in the top 15. The Davis County seventh-grade team of Jay Lynn Sharp, Allysa Yahnke, Pyper Yahnke and Sarah Early placed second.

In Class 1A, Tyler Crawford’s fourth-place finish helped Sigourney place fifth as a team in seventh-grade boys. Pekin’s Trevor Northup and Ryan Millikin both placed in the top 15 to help Pekin finish sixth. Both Pekin girls teams took home first place, as the eighth graders were led by Gwynne Wright, who took home the title. Sloan Reighard, Taylor Lock, Payton Lock and Nikole Arendt all placed in the top 15 for the Pekin eighth graders. Pekin’s Shea Dahlstrom won the individual seventh-grade title for Pekin, while Taylor Reynolds placed third and Chelsea Lamphier placed fifth. Kaylee Linder, Bonnie Becker and Madison Fears all had a top 15 finish for Pekin.
