---- — DANVILLE – Two nights and two games into the season, Brennon Elder has had the two biggest hits of the season for the Cardinal baseball team. After drilling a grand slam homer out of Cardinal High School’s baseball diamond in their season-opening win over New London, Elder hit his second grand slam of the rare inside-the-park variety to put a cap on the Comets’ 8-1 Southeast Iowa Superconference south road win at Danville Tuesday.

Kyle Kent added three doubles and three RBI for Cardinal. Conner McElderry gave the Comets a great effort on the hill, pitching seven solid innings while allowing just one run on four hits and one walk while striking out six.

“Our defense was much improved. Conner was around the plate all night, and our defense made some plays,” Cardinal head baseball coach Tom Hallgren said. “It’s a good way to start the season.”

Cardinal (2-0, 2-0) hosts Van Buren in a third SEISC South matchup of the opening week tonight.
