AMES – The Ottumwa baseball team bounced back from being thumped 15-5 in the front half of a doubleheader against Ames to take the Little Cyclones to the limit in the nightcap Thursday.

But, despite a game effort, the Bulldogs came up a little short and fell to Ames 6-5.

In game one, Ottumwa endured a catastrophic first inning that ended with them on the wrong end of a 9-0 deficit in game one. The Little Cyclones used two three-run home runs and a number of walks to build their cushy lead.

“What we had trouble with was throwing strikes,” Ottumwa baseball coach John Jaeger said.

Jaeger also said that his team entered the game with a plan to pitch low and outside to the Little Cyclones, but his pitchers failed to execute this plan.

The few positives that could be gleaned from the game came from Collin Schulz, who went 2-2 with two doubles, and Kyle Keck, who had two RBI. Cooper Smith suffered the loss on the hill for Ottumwa.

Instead of coming out uninspired, the Bulldogs gave Ames all it could handle in the nightcap. The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the third when the Little Cyclones poured in five runs in an inning highlighted by another Ames’ three-run homer.

The Bulldogs scored the final four runs of the game, but it wasn’t quite enough to garner them a victory.

Griffiths, Schulz and Mooney, who started and finished the game on the mound for Ottumwa, both went 2-4 at the plate and Chris Peden went 2-3 at the plate. Mooney and Johns were the sources of the Bulldogs’ two doubles.

“Other than pitching, I thought we played pretty well as far as overall aspects of baseball,” Jaeger said about the two games. “I liked the way we kept playing in the second game. We very easily could have put our tails between our legs and walked away.”

Ottumwa (18-17, 14-8) plays host to CIML Metro opponent Des Moines Roosevelt in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Monday on Senior Night at Legion Memorial Field.
