OSCEOLA – The 11th-ranked (Class 3A) Clarke softball team used a trio of home runs and an outstanding pitching performance by Libby Bemis to defeat Centerville 6-1 Friday in the Class 3A, Region 6 semifinals.
The Big Reds just couldn’t get any offense going against the Indians’ Libby Bemis who only yielded one hit to the Indians in the contest. The only run Bemis, who recorded a total of 12 strikeouts, surrendered to the Big Reds came in the first inning when Centerville capitalized on a couple fielding errors by the Indians.
In fact, the Big Reds sole hit against Bemis didn’t occur until the top of the seventh when Rachel Valentine cranked a double to right field. Kassidy Spurgin, Sarah Pate and Devon Carson all homered for Clarke.
The Indians will now move on and compete for a state tournament berth in the regional finals Monday at 7 p.m. in Ottumwa. Meanwhile, the Big Reds finished its season with a record of 19-17
