Second-ranked Sabers blank Moravia

MORAVIA – The team with the best record in the state took its first step to being the best team in Class 1A on Tuesday. Otis Roby and Drew Carlson combined to throw a six-inning one-hit shutout for the second-ranked Twin Cedars Sabers, who scored six runs in the first inning of their first postseason game.

The Sabers added single runs in four of the next five innings, clinching a 10-0 shutout of Bluegrass rival Moravia Tuesday night in the second round of Class 1A, District 10 postseason baseball action. Roby improved to 10-0 with the win, striking out six batters in the first three innings, before Carlson came on to strike out four more batters over the final three frames.

Carlson also drove in three runs at the plate while Corey Harrell had a double and two RBI in the win for the Sabers. No. 2 Twin Cedars improves to 32-2 on the season and will face 16-3 Moulton-Udell, who also easily advanced in Class 1A, District 10 play on Tuesday with an 11-2 win over 7-14 Mormon Trail. The Sabers swept the Eagles twice this season and beat out M-U for the Bluegrass Conference title.

Moravia finishes the season with an overall record of 5-23.

Cardinal clips Tri-County

KEOTA – Brennon Elder closed out Tri-County’s baseball season by sending the Cardinal Comets on to the district semifinal round despite a tense battle from the Trojans in the second round of Class 1A, District 9 postseason action Tuesday. Elder had a double, a triple, scored twice and struck out the side in the seventh to close out a 7-5 win over Tri-County in Keota.

Pekin completes’ sweep of Sigourney

KEOTA – Keaton Winn and Nazareth Rambo matched their pitching feats against Sigourney from the regular season on Tuesday in Pekin’s postseason encounter with their “Skunk River” rivals. Winn pitched into the sixth inning to earn his second win of the season over the Savages before handing the ball off to Rambo, who struck out the final batter for a save as Pekin earned another tight win over Sigourney 3-1 in Keota in the second round of Class 1A, District 9 play.
