OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa swim team trounced Des Moines Hoover/North 101-69 Thursday at The Beach Ottumwa.

The victory gave the Bulldogs their first winning record of the season (3-2-1), a vast improvement from where Ottumwa was at during this time last season.

“Coming back from [Christmas] vacation, we had a lot of swimmers who worked really hard during vacation,” coach Heidi Owens said, “but we had some who couldn’t come to practice. We’re excited we were able to pull it off.”

Riley Hammel played a role in three of Ottumwa’s six first-place finishes. Hammel helped the Bulldogs secure first-place finishes in 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle medley relay, and he grabbed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.32.

Grant Gullion, much like Hammel, helped Ottumwa in both relay and individual races.

He took first in the 100-yard butterfly with  59.43, as he managed to put some distance between himself and Hoover’s Andrew Gamble on the final leg of the race. In addition, Gullion also was a part of Ottumwa’s first place 400-yard freestyle relay team, which won the race in dominating fashion.

The Bulldogs quickly amassed a large lead that  never relinquished, finishing with a time of 3:43.34, which was about 20 seconds faster than their nearest competition.

Caleb Copple bolstered Ottumwa’s final score with solid performances in relay and individual races. Copple, along with Alex Christensen, Hammel and Adam Mueller, finished first in the 200 medley relay with 1:52.75. He also placed first in the 100 backstroke with 1:02.90.

Owens said her team’s depth has played a role in the success her team has enjoyed this season.

“We have a lot of boys who can swim a lot of different events,” the coach said.

“A lot of our guys from last year have really improved,” Gullion said.

Ottumwa (3-2-1, 1-0-1) heads to Des Moines  on Saturday for the Des Moines Hoover Invitational at noon.
