The Ottumwa bowling teams were victorious in duals against Johnston Monday, as the Bulldog girls steamrolled the Dragons 2,944-2,456 and the boys cruised to an easy 3,076-2,808 win.
Bailey Palmer rolled a team-high average of 226.5. The freshman bowling sensation was followed by Sydney Swallow (208.5) and Payton Wilbanks (207). In addition, Lynissa Lasley bowled an 192 average, Michaela Malloy 188.5 and Sierra Lennie 170.5.
“We started out really good in the first game,” Ottumwa coach Doug Techel said. “[We] got caught up in some transition in the second game, but we have to really work on our Baker games.
“Two thousand, nine hundred forty-four ... That’s a good score. We want to be right around 3,000 when we get to the state meet. We want to peak at the right time.”
Although the team practices a lot on their regular games, Palmer said, they don’t ever practice Baker’s games. She did, however, say that her team’s attitude was noticeably better today.
“I think we could still improve on our attitude, and we could still improve on Bakers,” she said.
Anthony Roberts shepherded the boys team to victory, as he rolled a team-high 231. The senior bowler is the Bulldogs’ renaissance man, as he constantly switches roles from bowler to cheerleader to motivator depending on what the situation requires.
Braxton Coble bolstered Ottumwa’s final tally by bowling an average of 223.5, and Isaac Goodman rolled a 222 average. In addition, the Bulldogs’ Joey Lee bowled a 214.5 average.
Austin Walker rolled an average of 177.5 and Jordan Mitchell finished with a 174 average.
Coble said the win helps his team confidence-wise, as substate creeps closer.
“We lost a couple [meets] early that kind of drug us down,” he said. “But I know that if we keep winning like we are it will help us towards substate.”
Coble said the Bulldogs need to continue to work on getting spares. Lee said the team’s play has gotten a lot more consistent since the start of the season.
Kolten Fountain rolled the highest average on the boys team, even though he competed at the junior varsity level. Fountain rolled a round of 203 and 264 for a team-best average of 233.5.
The Bulldog girls (9-0) team and the boys team (6-3) will bowl again Thursday at Southeast Polk.
