No. 3 Indianola too much for Ottumwa girls

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa girls basketball team experienced a bad case of deja vu Friday.

The Bulldogs — similar to the last time they played the Indians — got off to a abysmal start that they couldn’t recover in their 48-17 loss to third-ranked (Class 4A) Indianola in CIML Metro Conference action.

Indianola held Ottumwa to no points in the first quarter. The Bulldogs got some good looks at the hoop in the opening minutes, but they were unable to convert. The Indians, on the other hand, looked sharp on both ends of the floor and led 16-0 after the first period.

Ottumwa got into the swing of things in the second quarter. The Bulldogs turned up the heat offensively, which sparked a surge in offensive productivity. Megan Black drilled a long jumper before halftime and the Bulldogs went into the locker room trailing, 24-8.

The Indians came out with renewed vigor in the third quarter, as Erica Davidson buried a  3-pointer that rolled around the rim and fell in, which extended Indianola’s lead to 30-8. Indianola’s chronically busy hands on defense induced the Bulldogs to commit a number of turnovers and prevented Ottumwa from getting into any sort of rhythm offensively.

Sydney Strunk, however, gave the Indians a dose of their own medicine throughout the contest as she incessantly badgered Indianola on defense. Strunk finished with a team-high four steals.

Olivia Roark led Ottumwa with seven points, including Ottumwa’s only 3-pointer. Black had all four of the Bulldogs blocks.

Ottumwa (3-13, 2-7) play at Des Moines East Tuesday in a CIML Metro Conference game.
