MELCHER — The Moravia girls basketball team bounced back from a pair of tough losses to Twin Cedars with a 58-32 Bluegrass Conference win at Melcher-Dallas on Monday.

Kendall Brown scored 20 points and Katelynn Tracy added 15 and cleared 10 rebounds as Moravia bolted out to a 23-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

“It was good to see us get back into a rhythm,” said Moravia coach Clint Woodward. “It was good to play Moravia basketball again.”

The Mohawks took non-conference losses to Twin Cedars — their only two losses of the season — in their last two contests. Neither of those games count toward Moravia’s Bluegrass Conference record, however, since one was a tournament game and the other was scheduled to be a non-conference game.

So the Mohawks, who are 14-2 overall, are still unbeaten at 6-0 in the conference. A win tonight at Mormon Trail will earn Moravia the regular-season Bluegrass Conference crown.

“We were able to beat Twin Cedars in our conference game, so a win (Tuesday) would give us an unbeaten conference record,” said Woodward.

Jenna Sheehan added 10 points for Moravia on Monday and Hannah Eastlick scored seven, while Sheehan and Autumn McDanel each dished six assists. McDanel also had three steals while Tracy blocked three shots.

EDDYVILLE — Shunyl Busch scored 22 points to lead the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont girls team to a 62-54 victory over Grinnell Monday.

“Shunyl played well offensively and we had a couple of girls who rebounded well for us,” Rocket coach Tony Fenton said.

Tasha Alexander had a tremendous all-around game for E-B-F, leading the Rockets in a slew of categories including assists, steals and blocks. Alexander scored 19 points, dished out a four assists, compiled nine steals and swatted three shots. Jarrah Jensen added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Mackenzie Jensen hauled in a team-high 10 boards.

“We ran the floor well and played pretty good defense,” Fenton said.

The coach, however, did note that his team got a little sloppy with the ball towards the end of the game.

“We were playing like we were behind,” he said.

The Rockets finished with 31 turnovers.

E-B-F (11-6, 7-1) plays host to Chariton tonight in a South Central Conference game.
