Rudock overcomes early mistake, ties game with TD pass

IOWA CITY — The first play of the game was one Jake Rudock probably wishes he could have back.

Instead, Iowa's sophomore quarterback spent the rest of the first quarter doing everything he could to make up for his initial errant throw that produced the first points of the game for Michigan. After throwing a 'pick-six' to Wolverine linebacker Brennen Bayer on the opening play for the Hawkeyes, Rudock finished the first quarter six of his next nine passes including a five-yard touchdown toss to senior C.J. Fiedorowicz to tie Iowa's senior day battle with Michigan at 7-7 after one quarter at cold Kinnick Stadium.

The final game at Kinnick Stadium in 2013 also turned out to be one of the coldest in the long history of the stadium. Official temperatures at kickoff were registered at 18 degrees.

Iowa dominated most of the first quarter, driving or starting in Michigan territory on three straight opening-quarter possessions. The first possession of the game for the Hawkeyes, however, ended as quickly as it began as Rudock rolled out and was hit by a Michigan blitz. Rudock's throw as he was being hit lofted right into Bayer's hands, allowing the Wolverine junior to run untouched into the end zone to give Michigan a sudden 7-0 lead.

Rudock immediately led Iowa down the field trying to answer the Wolverine score. Iowa's next drive stalled at the 20 and kicker Mike Meyer pushed a field goal attempt wide right, allowing Michigan to maintain a seven-point lead.

After an Iowa stop and a 19-yard punt by Matt Wile, Iowa got a short field by starting on the Wolverine 43. Rudock hit an 18-yard pass to Kevonte Martin-Manley, helping the Hawkeyes overcome a clipping call at the start of the drive, and rushed for a 19-yard gain to Michigan's 11 before hitting Fiedorowicz rolling out to the right from the Michigan 5 to even the score.
