More miscues by Hawkeyes help Michigan open 21-7 halftime lead

IOWA CITY — Overcoming a interception return for a touchdown and a missed field goal isn't easy to do.

Somehow, heading into the second quarter, Iowa had managed to overcome it. The early 'pick-six' thrown by Jake Rudock and a missed 38-yard field goal by Mike Meyer seemed to be fogotton as the Hawkeyes entered the second quarter tied at 7-7 with visiting Michigan on a chilly 'Senior Day' at Kinnick Stadium.

But after stopping the Wolverines to start the second quarter, Rudock's second interception in as many quarters started a Michigan surge to the halftime locker room. Devin Gardner threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Wolverines, connecting from two yards out with A.J. Williams and nine yards out on third down with 41 seconds left in the half to Jeremy Gallon to give Michigan a 21-7 lead over the Hawkeyes.

Iowa owned many advantages at halftime, including outgaining Michigan in total yards 170-113. The Hawkeyes hurt themselves with mistakes and missed opportunities as a turnover on downs in Wolverine territory and two missed oppotunities at field goals kept Iowa from putting points on its side of the scoreboard.

After Gardner connected with Gallon to double Michigan's lead, former Mount Pleasant star Jordan Cotton seemed to give Iowa what it needed with 60-yard kickoff return to the Wolverine 39. A 17-yard pass to Damon Bullock set up Meyer for a field goal try at the end of the half, but a bobbled hold kept the kick from getting off as the half came to a close.
