Red-hot Trojans roll past Washington into district final

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Trojans continued to build on the success they established throughout the regular season Friday night as the postseason got under way. After winning their last nine games and a share of the Southeast Conference championship, the Trojans added a victory in the Class 3A, District 7 semifinals to their recent resume as Joseph Hietpas struck out 12 batters over seven innings in a 5-2 win over conference rival Washington.

"I think we definitely have confidence in ourselves as a team right now. We know how to win and we're confident we can win any game," Hietpas said after allowing just two runs on four hits in this seventh win of the season.

Fairfield gave their ace pitcher an early lead to work with, scoring three runs in the opening two innings. Kooper Dahlstrom drove in the first run of the contest with an RBI single in the opening frame before Spencer Peterman's deep drive to center in the second brought in two more runs to put the Trojans up 3-0.

"I think the guys really do believe at this point they can beat anyone," Fairfield head coach Josh Allison said. "It's one of those simple things where we go out and try to score a few runs early on to put the pressure on the opponent. It worked out well."

Fairfield will take a 10-game winning streak and a 25-8 overall record back to their home diamond to play for a district title on Monday at 7 p.m. The Trojans host Fort Madison, who improved to 17-22 with a 5-2 win of their own over Mount Pleasant, the team that shared the Southeast Conference title with Fairfield.

"I think there's no doubt that baseball is back here in Fairfield," Allison said.
