---- — ANKENY — The Ottumwa boys tennis team got tripped up by doubles play in its 8-3 dual loss at Ankeny Tuesday.

The Bulldogs battled the Hawks to a 3-3 tie in singles play, but they were winless in doubles’ action. Despite the goose egg in doubles’ play, Bulldog coach Alan Paris said the matches were competitive.

“A lot of deuces went their way,” he said. “Were close in most of the matches, we just couldn’t get over the hump to pull any of the matches out.”

The Ray brothers, Steve and Zack, along with Sam Kramer, who was playing in his first varsity singles match of the season in the No. 4 slot, provided the Bulldogs with their singles victories.

Steve Ray cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tabor Van De Poh 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles action, and Zack Ray, a freshman with a boatload of promise, dominated Luke Benna 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 singles.

“The brothers Steve and Zack Ray did a great job of controlling their opponents to win their singles matches,” Paris said.

Meanwhile, Kramer scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Grant Menadre.

“Sam Kramer did a nice job of playing under control and getting the big win for us,” the coach said.

Ottumwa plays at CIML Metro opponent Des Moines Hoover Thursday .
