THE PIT STOP
By SCOTT WATSON
---- — Hello race fans and welcome to The Pit Stop.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the items being auctioned off at The Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa on Wednesday nights to help offset expenses Mark Widmar and his family has been incurring since his on-track racing accident at Oskaloosa on May 1. This Saturday night, his family is putting on an event at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ottumwa to help in those fundraising efforts.
The food will be available starting at 6 p.m. with free-will donations being accepted and the auction will begin at 7 p.m. Odyssey Music DJ Service of Ottumwa will be playing tunes after the auction has been completed.
The food consists of pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and all of the fixins to go along with them. Some of the auction items that I know of for sure include NASCAR autographs, gift baskets, a hot air balloon ride, an airplane ride, gift certificates, Cyclone football tickets, local artwork and many more items.
The family has been putting a lot of time into this event and they are looking for a good turnout to raise some money for the expenses he is incurring.
The Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa has a Sport Mod Special tomorrow night where $1,000 is up for grabs for the Sport Mod feature winner. It is also Halloween in June at the track.
The kids are invited to come to the track in their favorite Halloween costume and trick or treating will begin at 7:15 p.m. on the front stretch, which is sponsored by the drivers. The night sponsors include Titan Machinery, John’s Tree Service and Vital Men.
Eddyville Raceway Park kicks off their weekend of racing on Friday night where it is a fun night and the High School division is in competition once again. Saturday action at Eddyville will see a regular bracket points race along with the Iowa True 10.5 Tire Class, Modified and Modified Jr divisions in competition.
ERP has their Musco Lighting Night of Fire event July 6. I will write more about that event in my column next week.
The Bloomfield Speedway will be in action Saturday night with the night of racing being sponsored by KBOE Radio and Mountain Dew KickStart.
The Saturday night of racing at The Knoxville Raceway is being sponsored by the Marion County Cattlemen, Corn and Soybean Growers. It is also twin features night for the 360 Sprint Car division.
The Figure 8 racers in the area will be heading for Barnes City Saturday night where they will be opening their 2013 season.
The Jefferson County Fair in Fairfield is taking place this week and they have a few grandstand events that pertain to motorsports. Wednesday night they have the Tough Trucks event where guys and gals bring in their trucks and run them through a course that includes jumps, turns and of course, mud, trying to see who can do it with the lowest elapsed time.
Friday night, quads and motorcycles take to the track for several classes of competition. Saturday night it is the Twin States Pulling Association Truck and Tractor Pull. Sunday will see the demolition derby wrap up the grandstand events and they will have fireworks after the demo derby.
Next week is the July 4 holiday and there is a lot of big events scheduled at tracks in the area and I will be writing about all of them in the next Pit Stop.
As you can see, once again, there are a lot of different events that you can check out this week. Head on out to an event this week and support those businesses that support racing.
Thanks for reading. I’ll see you at the track. Gone racin.’
