Bulldogs drop dual to talented Bettendorf squad

BETTENDORF — The Ottumwa tennis team lost a competitive dual against an imposing Bettendorf team 6-3 Friday in a match that pitted the Bulldogs against the Bulldogs.

Zack Ray and Sam Kramer were the sources of the Bulldogs’ — of the Ottumwa variety, not the host Bulldogs from Bettendorf — three victories. Ray defeated Bettendorf’s Bryce Brien 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in No. 2 singles.

“Zack started playing better and better as the match went on,” Ottumwa coach Alan Paris said. “He got really aggressive and started to make the other kid make mistakes.”

Meanwhile, Kramer prevailed over Josh Sumhlei 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles.

“Sam Kramer is playing really nice and consistent for us,” Paris said. “Sam is a really nice surprise this year. ... How well he’s playing.”

Then, in No. 1 doubles, Ray and Kramer downed Brien and Sumhlei 6-4, 7-6(7-2) in No. 1 doubles action.

The coach said Steve Ray, who played at less than 100 percent because of an ankle injury, ran into a steep challenge in Michal Porubcin, who knocked off Ray 6-0, 6-3 in No. 1 singles.

“He [Ray] still played pretty good,” Paris said. “Steve Ray ran into a really nice player.”

In addition, the coach said his No. 4 singles player Mitch Buller’s match also was very competitive.

“Mitch Buller was in the match all the way,” Paris said. “He played really well, he just didn’t get the deuces.”

Buller dropped his match to Isaac Luebke 6-3, 6-4.

Ottumwa (2-1) competes in the Pleasant Valley Invitational today.
