Centerville golfers reign supreme at home invite

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville boys golf team continued to impress Tuesday, as even the rain-soaked protestations of Mother Nature couldn't stop the Big Reds from capturing first at their home North-South Invite last Tuesday with a collective score of 300 strokes.

Alex Moorman was at the vanguard of the Big Reds' success, firing a tournament-low, two-under par score of 70 strokes to lead his team to victory.

"All in all I was happy with our performance," Big Reds' coach Mike Carney said. "Sometimes when you have bad weather like this you lose control of what your'e doing out there."

Carney said the weather conditions were especially arduous on the back nine.

"I think Alex showed mental toughness playing the back nine," the coach said.

The Albia boys squad corralled second at the invite with a collective score of 319 strokes. The Blue Demons' Tyler Maddison tied for the second-lowest overal score by shooting a 74. The Big Reds' Jake Hargrave finished right behind Maddison with 75 strokes and his teammate Brad Irwin and the Blue Demons' Griffin Osing each shot a 77.

"Brad Irwin played really well for us with a 77 and that's what we need from our fourth spot," Carney said.

Blake Dabney fired a 78 for Centerville and the Big Reds Colton Belloma and Albia's Joey Sinnott each shot an 83.

Chariton nabbed fourth in the tournament with a 367 and Davis County came in eighth with a 381.
