Ottumwa girls tennis team records second consecutive shutout

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls tennis team recorded its second shutout in a row last Friday, as the Bulldogs overpowered and overwhelmed CIML Metro opponent Des Moines Hoover 11-0.

Once again, the meet was ornamented with matches that spelled out in bold letters just how dominating Ottumwa's victory was. Hayli Beeson, Megan Black and Sydney Grooms all triumphed in singles action without dropping a single game to their opponents. Furthermore, as a team, Ottumwa yielded only six games to the Huskies in singles play.

"A lot of them were having a really good serving night and dominated a lot with their serves," Ottumwa tennis coach Leanna Nelson said, "and they were consistent with the ball, which forced their opponents to make the first mistake."

In doubles play, the story remained pretty much the same. Beeson and Black were especially impressive, shutting out their opponents 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. The No. 1 singles team of Jennifer Klodt and Jill Ardueser and the No. 3 team of Caroline Carlson and Andrina Helgerson were almost as dominant, as each team surrendered only one game to their opponents.

"I'm very happy with our efforts," Nelson said. "I'm definitely proud of the girls and the way they come out and compete every single night."

Ottumwa plays host to Des Moines North at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
