Albia girls gain Chariton Invite golf title

CHARITON — One of the best days to golf yet this season, the Albia Lady Dees claimed the first-place plaque at the Chariton Invitational on Saturday. It was a bounce-back effort for Albia, who fell to Ottumwa in their previous outing at the Oskaloosa Invitational.

The Lady Dees fired an even 400 shots over 18 holes to defeat Centerville at 431, Grinnell at 448 and PCM at 456. Chariton was one golfer short of the four golfers needed for a team score.

Cassidy Van Veen of PCM shot a 94 for medalist honors. Albia's Lexie Van Polen and Grinnell's Sarah Frishmeyer shot rounds of 96 for runner-up honors.

"It was another good day for Lexie, as her second round 45 was the low nine-hole round for the day," said Albia head girls golf coach Mike Duea. "She has a number of medalist and runner-up finishes this year."

Albia's team score of 400 was completed with Cassie Crall at 98, Maria Maddy at 101 and Niki Angran at 105. Emily Scala had 108 and Sydney DeBruin had 115 in reserve roles.

"Our team has been real consistent in what we are shooting and it was good to see Niki step in to have a score that counted for our squad, especially when Emily did not feel that well early in round Saturday morning," Duea said. "Also, as a freshman, Sydney is improving very steadily for us."

Marissa Hunt led Centerville with a score of 102. Cassie Carpenter had the top score for Chariton with a 115 on the Lakeview County Club course.

Albia moves to 16-1 for the season and is 10th-ranked in the state for Class 3A as determined by IGHSAU scoring averages. The Lady Dees will compete in a large Invitational hosted by Moravia at The Preserve Course on Thursday.
