Ottumwa golfers take third at Ames

AMES — Veenker Golf Course is a course that will test every facet of your game. It put some of the best girls golfers in the state to the test on Monday in the Turk Bowman Invitational.

With Shea Collett leading the way, the Ottumwa girls golf team showed they were equal to challenge in the nine-team tournament. Collett placed eighth in the tournament with a round of 94 as the Bulldog girls finished third as a team with a score of 393.

“The golf course is probably one of the most challenging courses we’ll play all year,” said Ottumwa head girls golf coach Steph Mishler. “Every shot challenged you mentally because you to plan out where you were going to place the ball.

“All that being considered, we played a solid round as a team. That’s good to see considering we’re in a stretch that will really be a challenge for us.”

Waukee, the defending Class 5A state champion, took the team title at Ames with a round of 358. Nevada, led by Christine Ausman’s meet medalist round of 82, finished second with a team total of 385.

Abbie Budan came home in 10th place on Monday for the Bulldogs with a round of 96. Bailey Palmer also placed in the tournament with a round of 99, good enough to finish 14th.

Ottumwa will be back on the course on Wednesday to play its second of three tournaments in a four-day stretch. The Bulldogs head to the Johnston Invitational to face some of the top teams in the state before hosting their own tournament at the Ottumwa Country Club on Thursday.

“There are four teams going to Johnston that could all be going to the Class 5A State Tournament,” Mishler said. “We’re hoping on Wednesday we’ll be seeing those teams for the first time. Hopefully, the second time will be at state.”
