DES MOINES — Despite a tremendous effort, The Ottumwa boys soccer team fell to Des Moines East 2-1 in overtime Monday.
"The guys tonight played their hearts out tonight," Bulldog soccer coach Aaron Rose said. "They deserved to win tonight."
An unassisted goal by Osvaldo Trejo gave Ottumwa a 1-0 lead with six seconds remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs, however, ran into some serious adversity when Octavio Rodriguez was hit with his second yellow card at the 60-minute mark, which prompted the referee to issue a red card.
Ottumwa continued to play hard, but being short a player on the field eventually caught up with them when the Scarlets scored in the 65th minute. The teams remained locked in a tie for the final 15 minutes and the match went into overtime.
Neither team was able to score until the final minute of overtime when Justin Vonderhaar was called for a foul. East's Carlos Smith punched in the penalty kick and the Scarlets escaped with the victory.
Ottumwa (4-8-2, 1-2) plays CIML Metro Conference opponent Des Moines North Thursday at Eric Wertheim Field.
