Zickefoose, Osky baseball team winners at benefit game

OSKALOOSA — Although the Oskaloosa baseball team posted a win over the softball team Friday night at Charlie Kentfield Field, the real winner was Tyler Zickefoose.

The teams played a benefit game for for Zickefoose, who was injured in an accident last month.

Among the activities benefitting Zickefoose were a silent auction, bake sale, T-shirts, bracelets and a raffle for grocery gift cards.

The teams also signed a bat for Zickefoose.

Players from area teams also took part in the game while the Pella High School baseball team attended the festivities.

There was also a Home Run Derby from several of the top slow-pitch softball players from around the state.

A few of the long blasts got as far as the bike path at Lacey Sports Complex.

One of the softball cloutters, Justin Butler, said Zickefoose's accident hit close to him as a friend of his, Chris Norton of Bondurant, is also recovering from a devastating hit in a football game.

"This has hit close to home for me," Butler said. "They've told him he wash't going to walk. I'm sure there are some people who have followed Chris and he's an inspiration to me and my family and I know of all in Bondurant. It's really awesome to see all these people out here supporting Tyler. It reminds me a lot of home. I wouldn't have missed it for nothing.

"The slow-pitch softball community in Iowa is actually very good. I can't say enough about every single guy here hitting. Every person out here is a great person and can be considered a brother. I know there would be no chance they would miss it."

Tyler's sister, Peyton, took part in the game and said he would have wanted her to play in the game.

"Tonight was amazing with so many people out here supporting Tyler and supporting my family," she said. "It was really awesome to see everybody come out. He wanted me to play."

She said Tyler is doing a lot better. He is eating regular food. Peyton said he had fried pickles for breakfast on Friday.

"He's doing pretty good right now," she said.
