Osky's Stewart state tennis run ends

IOWA CITY — Oskaloosa’s Jaime Stewart run for a Girls State Tennis title ended early on Thursday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Stewart fell in the first round of state singles competition to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Ali Arns in a 6-1, 6-1 sweep that left the Indians’ senior left needing two-straight wins just to place in the tournament.

Against Ballard’s Emily Jurgensen, Stewart fell by an identical score 6-1, 6-1 score. The loss brings Stewart’s season to an end.

The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of the Class 1A State Singles semifinals. Top-seeded Haley Resnick of Davenport Assumption, second-seeded Kate Walker of Red Oak, third-seeded Courtney Schneider of Dubuque Wahlert and fourth-seeded Allison Jasper of Cedar Rapids Xavier will play on Friday to decide a girls state tennis champion.
