No. 15 (1A) Sigourney rallies past Warhawks for eight-inning win

NEW SHARON – Down 5-1 late at North Mahaska, 15th-ranked (1A) Sigourney scored the final four runs of regulation before a seven-run explosion in the top of the eighth lifted the Savages to a come-from-behind 12-5 win at North Mahaska in a South Iowa Cedar League thriller.

Brooke Schroeder’s three-run homer in the sixth inning completely erased the Warhawks’ lead, tying the game at 5-5. Sigourney then sent 10-straight hitters to the plate in the eighth and took the lead for good with Emily Danowsky’s two-run double.

Four-straight run-producing hits led to the seven-run rally for the Savages, capped by Karah Appleget’s two-run homer.

“What was nice to see is the girls were so calm,” Sigourney head softball coach Shelly Striegle said. “Going into the fifth inning down 5-1 and even down 5-2 going into the sixth, I kept wondering when they might start to panic. They never did. They kept looking for good pitches to hit and looked for a little bit of small ball at first and finally used the long ball at the end.”

Sarah Bowen had three hits including a double for North Mahaska while Carissa McBirnie was 2-5 with a double and two runs scored. Both No. 15 Sigourney (18-5, 16-2) and North Mahaska (16-9, 14-4) were in key SICL matchups Tuesday as the Courier went to press as the Savages hosted BGM while the Warhawks traveled to SICL leader No. 5 (1A) Lynnville-Sully.

The Savages will wrap up the regular season making up an SICL contest against English Valleys while North Mahaska will host Montezuma on Friday.
