---- — KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren got a pair of hits, including doubles, from Hanna Haynes and Lydia Heald while Payten Hughes added a home run as Van Buren picked up a solid 4-1 Southeast Iowa Superconference south division win Monday.
Alicia Fitzsimmons struck out six batters while giving up just three hits to earn her sixth win in the pitching circle for the Warriors. Hughes drove in two runs for Van Buren while Haynes and Heald each produced runs as the Warriors scored in each of their last three at-bats to rally from an early 1-0 deficit.
“The girls are really starting to come around,” Van Buren head softball coach Eric Speer said. “They’re starting to play like a team and you can’t ask for a better time for that than right before regionals start.”
Van Buren (9-13, 3-9) traveled to Keokuk for a non-conference road test Tuesday as the Courier went to press. The Warriors wrap up the regular season Friday against another Southeast Conference foe, Fort Madison, in a varsity doubleheader at home.
