---- — MORAVIA – Freshman pitcher Autumn McDanel shook off an early unearned run to shut down 12th-ranked (2A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on just four hits as Moravia used a three-run rally in the fourth inning to pull off a 3-1 stunner over the Rockets, who will be playing this week for a South Central Conference title later this week.

McDanel struck out seven batters to earn her 10th win of the season as the Mohawks struck for three runs on seven hits off Rocket pitcher Nataliah Hopkins. Sam Williams had three hits and joined Katelynn Tracy, who had a triple, in driving in a run and scoring once during the game-changing rally.

“It was exciting for us. It was nice to see what our girls are capable of doing when our girls can put a complete game together,” Moravia head softball coach Jarred Power said. “We had a few errors early, but we settled down and made some plays. It also helps when your pitcher can throw a great game like that.”

Sadie Baugher had a hit and scored the only run of the night for No. 12 (2A) EBF (22-7). The Rockets hosted Chariton Tuesday as the Courier went to press needing to win to set up a first-place SCC showdown at No. 12 (3A) Clarke Thursday.

Moravia (12-13) hosted Davis County Tuesday in their regular season finale.

Comets shut out New London

NEW LONDON – Delaney Ridgway tossed a five-hit shutout and Lindsay Moore drove in both Cardinal runs in the third inning as the Comets kicked off the final week of the regular season with a 2-0 Southeast Iowa Superconference south shutout at New London Monday.

The victory allowed the Comets to lock up second place in the SEISC south behind West Burlington-Notre Dame, the top-rated team in Class 3A. Cardinal looked to do so with a win in their final home game of the regular season against Central Lee Tuesday as the Courier went to press.

“This is a real good beginning to this week,” Cardinal head softball coach Jerald Harter said. “Our defense really played well. We’ll need that as we head into the postseason.”

Cardinal (15-13, 9-3) will conclude the regular season not too far from home, playing in the 39th Ottumwa Classic starting with the first game on Friday at Frank Huston Field against SCC leading No. 12 (3A) Clarke at 9 a.m.
