---- — HIGHLAND – The Pekin softball squad lost a tough pitchers’ duel to Southeast Iowa Superconference north champion Highland on Tuesday. The Panthers battled the fourth-ranked team in Class 2A in a tight matchup, losing 3-0 in what could be a prelude to a postseason matchup in just a couple of weeks.

“Highland is a very good team and well deserving of their No. 4 ranking, but this was really a 1-0 game,” Pekin head coach Bryan Marley said. “We have a very good chance of playing them again down the road. All we have to do is win our first game, they have to win their first game and we’ll be facing each other in the regionals.”

Pekin (19-10, 13-5) returned home to host Keota Wednesday as the Courier went to press. The Panthers wrap up the regular season next Monday at WACO.
