OTTUMWA – The Ottumwa baseball team learned on Tuesday that they will be hitting the road for the postseason. It will, however, be a very familiar trip for the Bulldogs.
Ottumwa will be the fourth seed in the Class 4A, Substate 7 portion of the Iowa High School Athletic Association baseball tournament. Unlike Class 1A, 2A and 3A, no teams in Class 4A will receive a bye from playing on Friday, July 19, meaning only the top three seeds are assured of hosting postseason games.
Therefore, the Bulldogs will hit the road on July 19 for a substate quarterfinal matchup against a CIML Metro Conference rival. Ottumwa will face Des Moines Lincoln, who split four regular season meetings with the Bulldogs this year including the most recent meeting between the two teams played in Des Moines just last week.
Fifth-seeded Urbandale will face second-seeded West Des Moines Valley while sixth-seeded Des Moines North takes on top-seeded Metro champ Des Moines East in the other Class 4A, Substate 7 match-ups. The three winners will be reseeded with the lowest remaining seed earning a bye and home field advantage in the substate title game.
Also on Tuesday, the Class 3A District and Substate pairings were announced with games also slated to be played on July 19. Area teams will be playing on in Substate 4 with Fairfield hosting games in District 7 as the Trojans take on Washington at 7 p.m. after Mount Pleasant faces Fort Madison.
In District 8, Centerville will play host to the semifinals and finals at Pat Daugherty Field. The Big Reds will open against Oskaloosa at 7 p.m. on July 19 with sixth-ranked Chariton, the top seed in the entire substate, opening play against Keokuk in Centerville at 5 p.m.
