Warriors score shutout at Mepo

MEDIAPOLIS — Garrett Saunders not only started and won a shutout victory over Mediapolis on Monday for the Van Buren baseball team, but played a role in producing most of the Warriors offense.

The sophomore stepped up at the plate to collect two hits, including a double, and scored one of Van Buren’s three runs while scoring his third win on the mound tossing five scoreless innings as the Warriors earned a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs.

Van Buren (19-5) wrapped up the regular season Tuesday at IMS as the Courier went to press.

The Warriors postseason road begins next week in Danville in a Class 1A District second round contest against either Burlington-Notre Dame or Holy Trinity.

WAPELLO – The Cardinal baseball team lost a tough test in a battle of top Southeast Iowa Superconference squads Monday night at Wapello.

A pair of fifth-inning runs led Wapello to a 4-2 victory over the Comets after Dakota Showman scored the tying run in the top half of the inning.

Conner McElderry suffered the tough loss on the mound, allowing just four hits over 4 2/3 innings while connecting on a double at the plate.

Brandon Eklofe added a double and an RBI for Cardinal (14-10), which will return to the diamond at home Thursday against Albia to close out the regular season.
