---- — OTTUMWA — Ottumwa golfer Matthew Walker came oh so close to winning the 38th PGA Junior Section Championship for boys ages 16-18 at the Ames Golf and Country Club this week.
Walker finished the two-day tourney with a score of 136 — six under par. After he shot a four-under par 67 Monday, the defending Iowa High School 4A state individual champion and Iowa PGA Junior Golfer of the year carded a 69 Tuesday.
His opening day 67 netted him a two-stroke lead over George Qian of Bettendorf. Qian, however, came back to tie Walker by firing a 67 in the second round.
Qian went on to prevail in the playoff.
Q He will go on to represent the Iowa PGA at the National 38th PGA Junior Championship in Washington DC that will run from July 30 through Aug. 2.
Walker, however, wasn’t the only Ottumwan to compete in the tourney.
Bron Bjerke competed in the tourney for ages 13-15 and Steve Langland tied for fifth place in the tourney for ages 10-12.
