Messer, Hammack seventh and eighth in 400

DES MOINES — Ottumwa’s Zach Messer and Spencer Hammack will be coming home with some hardware.

They’ll take a shot at some more medals today.

Messer and Hammack placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the boys Class 4A 400 meter dash on Thursday at the 2012 Iowa Co-Ed State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Messer ran the event in 50.29 seconds, with Hammack one-hundredth of a second behind at 50.30.

Messer was busy on Thursday, as he also ran in the 200 meter dash preliminary. He took the 22nd best time in that race, finishing at a clip of 23.26, not good enough for Saturday’s finals. He and his fellow senior Hammack will be back in action today as a part of Ottumwa’s 4x400 relay team, along with Patrick Peters and Ben Kramer. That race is scheduled to begin at 7:40 p.m.

The Ottumwa girls 4x400 team will be on the track just 20 minutes earlier, as Sydney Strunk, Charlette Flanders, Ashlyn Thompson and Katy Fish are scheduled to run their event at 7:20 p.m. today. Strunk, a junior, competed Thursday in the open 400, finishing 17th overall with a time of 1:02.30. The Bulldogs also had their girls shuttle hurdle team in competition on Thursday, as the quartet of Kiera King, Chloe Davis, Tory Wolver and Kelsey Guyette ran the 21st-best preliminary time. The team’s clock of 1:10.92 was good not enough to qualify for Saturday’s finals.

The Pekin boys track team got the most out of Bryce Sines on Thursday, the Panther senior placed second in the Class 1A long jump with a leap of 22-5.5. Sines also ran the top time in the 200 dash prelims and the fourth-best time in the 100 dash prelims, sending him into Saturday’s finals in both events. Sines’s time in the 200 was 22.96 while his time in the 100 was 11.56.

Pekin was in fourth place in the Class 1A team standings after one day with 13 team points. Derek Morales placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 50-11.5 for the Panthers, while the Panther 4x800 relay team of Graham Wittrock, Eli Harper, Tim Murray and Tyson Lamb placed ninth overall in a time of 8:32.69.

Fairfield’s Sydney Howard, a junior, is poised for some high honors on Saturday. Howard qualified for the girls Class 3A finals in both the 100 and 200 dashes, posting the top time in the 100 (12.59) and the second-best time in the 200 (25.79.)

The Davis County Mustangs earned some team points in three different girls events in Class 2A. The Mustang 4x800 team of Shelby Graves, Maggie Hougland, Addie McKee and Ally McClure placed fourth overall in a time of 9:54.22. Junior Chandra Smith placed seventh in the 3000 run with a time of 11:09.23. Smith will return to run the 1600 for Davis County. Freshman Kate Birchmier placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 38-0.

Eddville-Blakesburg senior Nicole Harnisch also placed in the 2A shot put, as her toss of 38-9 earned her sixth. Moravia’s Katelynn Tracy earned third place in the girls Class 1A shot put with a toss of 38-0.5. Both Harnisch and Tracy will compete in the discus today.

Essa Johnson of Fairfield Maharishi placed sixth in the Class 1A long jump (16-7).

In the boys Class 3A 400 dash, Centerville’s Jamey Foster earned sixth place overall with a time of 49.66.

In one of the closest races of the day, North Mahaska senior Tanner Wanders took second place in the boys Class 1A 3200 run. Wanders time of 9:37.08 was just two-hundredths of one second behind event champ Conner Smock of Lisbon, who ran in 9:37.06.
