No. 3 Warrior golfer take third at Beu Mussatto Invite

MACOMB, Ill. — Last year, the Indian Hills golf team started moving forward during the final round of the Beu Mussatto Invitational.

After Saturday, IHCC hopes there won’t be any more moving backwards.

The third-ranked Warrior golfer could not duplicate last year’s come-from-behind effort to defend their title in Western Illinois on Saturday. A close battle with a pair of Summit League schools left the two-time defending NJCAA Division I National champs in third place during a tougher day for scoring a final-round 306 left IHCC four shots behind team champ South Dakota State and two back of IUPUI with a three-round 893 total.

After IUPUI opened the tournament in mid-50 sunshine on Friday morning with the lowest team round of 286, conditions got progressively tougher as colder rainy weather moved through the area. No one was able to break 300 on Saturday morning with South Dakota’s final round of 301 proving to be the best team score of the final 18 holes.

Former Oskaloosa all-state linkster Mitch Tucker was one of the strongest golfers in the field on Saturday, leading Indian Hills by the end of the tournament with a even-par final round of 72. The round left Tucker tied for third individually with a three-over three-round 217 total, just two shots behind meet medalist Ruiz Santiago of IUPUI who started the day tied with Tucker at five-over par.

The third-ranked Indian Hills golf team head back to Illinois in two weeks, when head coach Mike Hagen hopes the conditions will be much more consistently Spring-like throughout the Midwest. The Warrior linksters next play in the Viking Golf Classic starting on Friday, April 12 in Milan, Illinois.
