Falcons outslug Southwestern, 15-11

CENTERVILLE — With five innings done Thursday at Pat Daugherty Field, it looked like Indian Hills was on their way to putting away Southwestern early for the second time in three days.

But unlike Tuesday’s game, which needed just seven innings to decide, IHCC couldn't finish off the Spartans until the final out of the ninth and final inning. That out, recorded by Jose Marin, came on a fly ball by Southwestern's Kyle Pruitt who represented the potential tying run as the Falcons had to hold on despite seven errors to edge the Spartans in a wild 15-11 slugfest.

Marin, who picked up his first save, was IHCC's sixth pitcher of the day and the fifth to work in the final four innings. Starter Adam Deneke left after giving up just three unearned runs on two hits over the first five innings while the Falcons opened up a 13-3 lead.

Catcher Kevin Valera had a homer and drove in three runs while normal catcher and starting designated hitter Kevin Cicali had four RBI and scored three times on two hits. Indian Hills pounded out six extra base hits, including five doubles, on the way to their 11th win in their last 14 games.

Indian Hills (11-9) is back home for their second Region XI four-game weekend series in a row. The Falcons host Marshalltown in regional doubleheaders at Daugherty Field starting Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
