OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa softball team did their seniors proud by sweeping Des Moines Easts 7-1 and 8-2 on senior night Monday at Huston Field.
The Bulldogs senior-laden team used a six-run inning to thrash the Scarlets in the front half of the doubleheader.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs ripped off six runs in an inning highlighted by a towering 3-run home run by Katie Sammons to right centerfield. The blast was Sammons 14th of the season, tying the all-time regular season record.
“It really means a lot to me that I was able to do that my senior year,” Sammons said. “It’s definitely an accomplishment I’ve been working toward this season.”
Sydney Strunk added to Ottumwa’s offensive output by drilling a line drive single to right field that scored Ashlyn Thompson. Sammy Garrett drew a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Sammons, upping the Bulldogs lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Mandi Moore, after a subpar outing against Ankeny Saturday in the Ottumwa Classic where she only lasted two innings, bounced back with a dominating performance that included a whopping 14 strikeouts.
Brittni Vogt, who has endured what at times has been a frustrating season, pitched brilliantly in the nightcap, throwing a no hitter through five innings on her way to a win. The senior hurler had the Scarlets off-balance and swinging wildly at pitches throughout the night. She ended up allowing two runs, only one of them earned, on four hits while recording eight strikeouts.
Katie Sammon chopped a 2-RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sammons and Olivia Roark both singled and scored in the bottom of the third and Sammons and Strunk both delivered RBI singles in the Bulldogs four-run sixth inning.
