Westchester, California hands Ottumwa first Babe Ruth World Series loss

Ottumwa Courier

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — Matthew Kanfer had two hits and drove in three runs as Westchester, California snapped the seven-game postseason winning streak of the Ottumwa 15-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars Monday to open the third day of the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 World Series. Kanfer drove in two runs during a three-run sixth that proved to be the difference in a 5-2 win for Westchester at Fireman's Field.

Westchester relied on starting pitcher Ulysses Perez to eat up innings en route to the win. Perez, who also had two hits including an RBI single in the three-run sixth for Westchester, allowed two earned runs, four hits and no walks while striking out five over seven innings of work on the mound.

Gage Ryder looked sharp on the mound in relief of Hopwood as Westchester managed just two hits off Ottumwa’s starting pitcher. Ryder allowed just one earned run, walking five and strucking out four during his five innings of work.

Ottumwa took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Chase Wood scored after leading off the game with a single. After making it to third with one out, Brok Hopwood’s sacrifice fly brought home Ottumwa’s lead-off hitter.

Westchester, CA went up for good in the second, scoring two runs on a fielder's choice. Ottumwa would not get another runner on base until the fifth when Andrew Mitchell singled to lead off the inning as Ottumwa left Gage Ryder stranded at second as the potential tying run before Westchester scored three times in the sixth.,

One run in the bottom of the sixth helped Ottumwa, IA close its deficit to 5-2. An RBI double by Hopwood gave Ottumwa life, but Perez rallied back to force Greg Howard into a fly out on the way to retiring the last four Ottumwa hitters in a row.

The loss leaves both Westchester and Ottumwa at 1-1 in the American Pool of the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 World Series. The top three of five teams in the pool advance to bracket elimination play, which starts on Thursday.

Ottumwa returns to the diamond Tuesday morning, facing Saginaw Valley, Michigan at 10 a.m.
