Lady Dees get Senior Night win

ALBIA — Albia used their final regular season home match to honor four seniors. These four seniors all had a hand in the 3-1 Albia volleyball win over Wayne Thursday night in Albia. After dropping the opening game (21-25), the Lady Dees survived a hard-fought game two to win (29-27). That seemed to take all the fight out of the visitors and Albia easily won games three and four (25-12, 25-9).

It was a junior that got off to a fast start for Albia. Brooke Bettis had three kills in game one to keep her team in it. Her second kill gave the Lady Dees a 9-7 lead. As so often happens in a game, after a team wins a long point, they grab a little momentum. Breanna Fourtune ended the long rally with a kill to tie it at 11. The visitors went up 13-11. Anna Riley put Albia back up 14-13 with a kill and Bettis’ third kill kept Albia  tied at 18.

“I really wanted to go hard early, especially for the seniors,” said Bettis. “I think we all feed off each other.”

Wayne used three late kills and a block to control the end of game one.

Albia led for the majority of the competitive second game. The Lady Dees led 22-16 before the visitors came back to force the wild finish. Bettis added three more kills but it was the hitting of Hannah Dustin that led Albia in the second. Dustin would go 16 of 17 hitting with four kills. Bettis and Dustin had back to back kills to put Albia up 19-12.

The visitors hurt their chances with eight early hitting errors in the tight second game.

Late kills by Emmie Beard, Katie Dyson and Dustin allowed Albia to hold leads as the game wound down. An ace serve by Sydney Weldon won it for Albia.

Another factor that let the home team hang on to win was the 10 for 10 serving of Hannah DeBruin.

“Wayne found some holes in our defense early and we had some service errors that hurt us,” said Albia coach Tessa Simpson. “We told our kids to just keep working on their responsibilities and we’d be OK.”

Albia controlled the third game from the start. Albia jumped out to an 8-1 lead on the basis of Dustin’s two kills and the serving of Kylie Peterson. Wayne had no answer for Dustin in the third. She would add four more kills, all on different kinds of shots. Shots down the line, a tip winner, and a deep shot to the corner were all in Dustin’s play book on this night.

“I like to hit down line but I try and work on all types of shots,” said Dustin. “I got off to kind of a slow start tonight but I felt good after I got going.”

Albia registered only four kills in the fourth game but even when they didn’t put a ball directly to the floor, the hitters were put in position to get good swings. DeBruin, the Albia setter, has the job of directing the Lady Dee offense.

“Our hitters are all a little different in where they like the ball,” said DeBruin. “Most of what I do is to try and read the situation and deliver the right set.”

DeBruin would again go 10 for 10 serving, including three aces. Her final ace ended the match.

“We started a little slow tonight,” said Simpson. “I still think the way we handled the match will help us get ready for the postseason.”

Albia (13-9) will travel to Knoxville for a tournament Saturday before preparing to host Chariton in their postseason opener.
