MORAVIA — The Twin Cedars Sabers used a potent passing game to down Moravia 35-0 in a shortened district football action Friday night in Moravia. The Eight-Player, District 5 game was called due to lightning with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening half. All stats count and the district points will be awarded.

Twin Cedars started their first drive at the Moravia 35 after a 36 yard kickoff return by  Levi Jones. Three plays later, Brent Parker threw the first of his three touchdown passes for the score. The scoring strike covered 24 yards to Jones.

After the Mohawks went three and out, they were forced to punt from deep in their own territory. Drew Carlson recovered the blocked punt in the end zone for the score. Tim Loeffler ran in the extra point and the Sabers led 14-0 just three minutes into the game.

Moravia’s second drive stalled after three plays deep in their own territory. After a seven-yard punt the visitors set up shop at the Mohawk 11. On the first play, Parker hit Dylan Roberts for the 11-yard score.

Parker, who would have one more scoring pass, talked about the Saber passing game.

“We spend a lot of time every day working on it. Our receivers are really dedicated to making it work,” he said.

Another three and out by the Mohawks caused punter Jon Eastlick to punt from his own 21. He boomed one that rolled into the end zone. The 59-yarder caused the Sabers to start their drive from their own 15.

Twin Cedars went the distance on six plays. A penalty by the Sabers called back a long touchdown, but on the next play, Parker hit Otis Roby for a 50-yard score and Twin Cedars led 28-0.

“This is the first year we have really tried to feature the passing game,” said Saber head coach Aaron Allspach. “It’s all about utilizing personnel.”

A 26-yard kickoff return by Sam Clouse gave Moravia their best starting field position at their own 34, but three plays later, Eastlick was again back to punt. This time he rolled a 47-yarder out at the Twin Cedars one.

In the Eight-Player, game it’s not uncommon to see a lineman in the backfield or as a wide receiver. The Sabers’ defensive lineman, Dalton Garcia, had two carries for 15 yards and a pass reception for 30 yards in the Saber drive.

“I like defense best,” said Garcia. “It’s really fun to be used diferent ways and contribute on offense.”

The Sabers completed the eight-play 79-yard drive with a 19-yard run by Parker on the first play of the second quarter.

Just two plays into the following Mohawk drive, the game was halted due to lightning. After a 30 minute wait, game officials and school officials decided to call the game.

“We saw enough from our guys and we’ve got some guys banged up so the decision was OK,” said Allspach. The Sabers will host Tri-County next Friday, with the winner qualifying for the playoffs.

Moravia, still looking for its first win, will host Seymour next Friday.

“Our seniors are hanging in there and injuries have gotten some of our young guys valuable exxperience,” said Moravia coach Denny Whitlow.
