Bulldog girls fall to No. 3 Waukee

WAUKEE — Facing their second top-10 team in a row on Monday, a 3-0 halftime deficit didn’t seem too bad to Ottumwa head girls soccer coach Brett McKenzie. The Bulldogs had kept third-ranked (3A) Waukee from a goal-scoring surge and would have a stiff wind at their backs when the second 40 minutes began.

Then, the winds shifted. Then, rain started to pour. Then, the floodgates opened up on the Ottumwa girls as the third-ranked Warriors scored seven times in the second half to hand the Bulldogs a second-straight 10-0 loss coming on the heels of No. 10 (3A) West Des Moines Valley pulling off the same feat last Thursday night.

“Waukee’s a very good team. They were knocking on the door the whole game,” McKenzie said. “(Ottumwa goalie) Averi (Cash) did a good job keeping them off the board, but the conditions just made it much tougher on us.”

“We really kind of limited the damage in the first half. All of a sudden, things just shifted on us. Eventually, it all started to cave in.”

Senior Taylor Woods was the catalyst for the Warriors, scoring a hat trick against Ottumwa including two of Waukee’s three first-half goals. Hannah McDevitt, Ellie Bunz and Alyssa Hewitt also scored goals as the Warriors (5-0) used a 34-0 advantage in shots to begin breaking away despite a great effort from Cash, who made 24 saves in net for the Bulldogs.

Ottumwa (2-5) will look to bounce back tonight, weather permitting, in their CIML Metro Conference opener. The Bulldogs hit the road to face Des Moines Lincoln at 7 p.m.

“We can be very competitive in the conference,” McKenzie said. “We want to win those games. We can challenge those teams. We have to come ready to play. I think we can bring the battle to some teams if we do that.”
