District finals postponed, to be played tonight

OTTUMWA — Impending winter weather has forced the Iowa High School Athletic Association to postpone several Class 1A and 3A boys basketball district finals scheduled for Thursday. Among them are three matchups featuring area teams with all three games being pushed back to tonight.

Both districts finals that will set up the Class 1A, Substate 5 title game were pushed back to tonight. In Albia, South Iowa Cedar League champion Sigourney (20-3) will meet Moulton-Udell (16-7), who knocked off Pleasantville on the road 74-69 Tuesday night to advance to the Class 1A, District 10 finals.

It will be the third straight Bluegrass opponent Sigourney has played in the postseason. The Savages dominated Seymour, 90-22, and Twin Cedars 86-34 on their home floor in their first two district games.

The winner in Albia will face the winner of the 1A, District 9 final, which also has been pushed back to tonight. Pekin (15-8), which picked up an impressive 52-42 road win at Keota on Tuesday, will face unbeaten top-ranked Danville in Muscatine. The 23-0 Bears haven’t lost since dropping the Class 1A state title game to Boyden-Hull 63-45 last March.

The two 1A area district champs are still scheduled to meet 24 hours later for a state tournament berth in Oskaloosa. The Substate 5 title game is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Saturday night.

In Class 3A, District 12, South Central Conference rivals meet for a third time this season in Knoxville. Fourth-ranked Centerville (19-2), which shook off a loss at Pella to close the regular season by dominating Knoxville in their district semifinal opener, faces Chariton tonight at 7 p.m.

The Chargers (16-6) earned a third matchup with the Big Reds in thrilling fashion. Chariton began the postseason the same way they finished the regular season, beating Oskaloosa 47-46. Freshman Daric Laing’s 3-pointer with one second left lifted the Chargers to the win.

Centerville earned a pair of double-digit wins over Chariton in the regular season. The Big Reds won 64-47 in Lucas County to open the second half of the year on Jan. 4, then scored a 66-54 win at Lakeview Gymnasium that clinched the SCC crown for Matt Kruzich’s squad.

Tonight’s winner faces the winner of the 3A, District 11 final between Little Hawkeye Conference foes Pella and Grinnell. That game, scheduled to be played at Southeast Polk High School in Runnells, has also been pushed back to tonight. The Tigers beat the Little Dutch twice in the regular season. The Class 3A, Substate 6 Final will be played in Oskaloosa on Monday night.
