CULLMAN, Ala. – In their quest to produce a winning weekend at the Wallace State JUCO Invitational, the Indian Hills softball team built leads in each of their two games on Saturday. Those leads, however, could not hold up as the Warriors gave up seven unanswered runs to Central Alabama in a 7-2 loss to open the day.

Looking to salvage a split in the second game against Snead State, IHCC couldn’t hold onto a slim 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Snead State rallied for a pair of runs off starting pitching Mackenzie Haight and relief hurler Courtney Collins to score a surprising 2-1 win on Saturday.

Errors proved costly to the Warriors in the opener. Three defensive miscues opened the door to five unearned runs by Central Alabama, including three in the third inning that rallied the Trojans after RBI hits by Felisha Durflinger and Kaitlyn Matzen put IHCC on top 2-0 in the top half of the frame.

Haight held Snead State off the scoreboard despite allowing seven hits over six innings in game two. IHCC offense, which only produced three baserunners in the contest, finally broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh after Matzen doubled and scored on Carrie Hudson’s RBI.

Snead State rallied back in their last at-bat as three hits in the final frame off Collins brought home the game-tying and winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Warriors after a 5-0 win in their season-opening and tournament-opening contest Friday against Calhoun.

Head coach Jim Overturf will see how his IHCC softball squad responds after a day off when the Warriors (1-4) face third-ranked (DI) Wallace State in a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Lady Lions won four of five games in their home invitational, including an 8-0 shutout of Indian Hills on Friday afternoon.
