ELDON — Brennon Elder had a huge blast to get Cardinal's baseball season off to a thrilling start against Southeast Iowa Superconference south rival New London on Monday. Elder drilled a second-inning grand slam to get the Comets off to a 7-0 lead against the Tigers, then slammed the door by striking out four batters for the final four outs of a 12-7 season-opening win at Cardinal High School baseball field.

Connor McElderry added three hits, three RBI and was one of five Comets to score a pair of runs while also joining Kyle Kent, Cole Campbell and Brandon Eklofe in nailing a double in the win. Elder drove in five runs as Cardinal overcame five errors to pick up their first win in their first game.

"Offensively, we had a great approach at the plate," Cardinal head baseball coach Tom Hallgren said. "It wasn't just the hits. We took a lot of walks and did a good job making their pitchers making them deliver the pitches we wanted. We do have clean up our defense, but the mistakes we made are definately fixable."

Cardinal (1-0, 1-0) is off on the road for the first time this season, playing today in another SEISC south matchup at Danville.
