Falcons split at Maple Woods

LIBERTY, Mo. – The first road trip of the season for the Indian Hills baseball team was supposed to take them to Maple Woods Community College. Instead, the Falcons saved the trip to suburban Kansas City for the final road trip of the regular season.

Freshman pitcher Derek Kawlewski came out of the bullpen to pitch over four innings of scoreless relief in the second game IHCC’s last two road games before a critical four-game regional home stand Wednesday.

While Kawlewski shut down Maple Woods, the Falcon bats rallied from a 3-1 deficit with five-straight runs to earn a 6-3 win and a split against the Monarchs after losing 4-1 in the opener.

Kawlewski earned her third win, scattering four hits while striking out four batters in relief of game two starter Jose Marin.

Freshman catcher Kevin Valera, meanwhile, rallied IHCC with a pair of hits including a solo home in the third inning and the go-ahead two-out single in the fourth.

Valera also drove in IHCC’s only run in game one with a second-inning RBI hit to bring in Joel Booker to tie the game at 1-1.

Indian Hills (29-18) returns home to take on fourth-ranked (DI) Iowa Western in a four-game regional series to close out the regular season. IHCC is three games behind the Reivers and must sweep the two-time defending national champions to earn the regular season Region XI title. Doubleheaders are set for 1 p.m. on Sunday and Noon on Monday.
