No. 15 (1A) Sigourney walks off with comeback win to end regular year

SIGOURNEY — With just a few final innings to finish off the regular season, the 15th-ranked (1A) Sigourney softball squad used an incredible last-inning rally to carry them into the postseason with their 20th win of the season. The Savages scored four runs in their final inning of the regular year, highlighted by a two-run walk-off triple by Bri Schauf that just missed leaving the park and gave No. 15 Sigourney a 5-4 South Iowa Cedar League victory.

“I thought it was over when she hit it,” Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle said. “The calmness of our players is still amazing to me. They still feel like, no matter what the situation is, they’re going to figure out a way to win. It’s the first time I’ve noticed it this week.”

Sigourney (20-5, 18-2) will look to carry that confidence into postseason play. The Savages host their opening postseason game Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in a second round Class 1A regional game against either BGM or Montezuma.

“20 is a good number to hit,” Streigle said. “We don’t have a huge number of games. We have to take advantage of the games we have to play.”
