SEMINOLE, Ok. —
Playing in its first game of the season, the Indian Hills baseball team threw themselves right into the heat of battle with a team that had 15 games under their belt.
Seminole State showed it was in full stride, especially at the plate, in winning its fourth-straight game. The Trojans pounded out 18 hits, five of which went for extra bases, to earn a 13-2 victory over the Falcons Wednesday afternoon in Oklahoma.
“We found out that there are some things we need to work on,” Indian Hills head coach Cam Walker said.
Former Albia ace Jake Stalzer got the ball on the mound as the opening-game starter. Stalzer tossed three scoreless innings for Indian Hills, keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0, before Seminole State got to the former Blue Demon with seven runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman Dario Polanco produced the first offense of the season for Indian Hills, driving in the first two Falcon runs with the Falcons first home run of the season. The two-run blast brought IHCC back within 7-2 in the fifth inning.
Six different pitchers took the mound throughout the day for Indian Hills. Seminole State (9-7) made things difficult on most of the Falcon hurlers, especially Justin Steelmon who was a perfect 5-5 at the plate with three RBI.
Matt Fultz added a pair of doubles and two RBI as part of a 3-4 hitting day for the Trojans. Billy Love kept the Falcons hitters from creating their own rally as the Seminole State starting pitchers struck out 11 Falcons over six innings of work.
“We’re usually at a disadvantage playing teams that have played a number of games already,” Walker said. “Nothing beats seeing live-game competition. I’m excited to see how we progress as we get more games in.”
Indian Hills (0-1) begins a 12-game, 10-day swing through Arizona Friday. The Falcons face the Arizona State Club Team in Scottsdale at 5 p.m.
