Bulldog swimmers fall in final race at North

DES MOINES — There was very little that separated Ottumwa and Des Moines North in their CIML Metro Conference girls swimming dual on Tuesday. In fact, there absolutely nothing separating the two teams after 10 races.

Heading into the final race of the night, the announcement was made that the Bulldogs and Polar Bears were dead even on the scoreboard at 78-78. With just one relay race, one last first-place finish would decide everything.

Unfortunately for Ottumwa, the North foursome of Moriah Ross, Mikolina Lowe, Jessica Jensen and Katherine Ross came home in a time of 4:05.61 to beat out the Bulldogs by almost 30 seconds to earn the decisive 400 free relay win to give the Polar Bears an 88-82 victory.

The final race gave North wins in all but one event. The Bulldogs, however, were able to with the Polar Bears with several second and third place swims to collect important points.

“We knew going in this would be a battle to overcome their race wins,” Bulldog head girls swimming coach Steph Mishler said. “We put forth a strong team effort that gave us a chance to win things in the final race. We just couldn’t quite pull it out.”

Ottumwa’s one win came early on as Claire and Caroline Carlson joined Maranda and Marissa Rupalo to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:11. Shayla Wolver, Kenzie McCoy, Hannah Wolver and Bethany Knox came in second for the Bulldogs in the same race, giving Ottumwa an early 12-2 edge that North had to work throughout the night to fight back from.

The Bulldogs head back on the road for their second dual in three days on Thursday. Ottumwa heads to Keokuk, seeking to avenge another last-event loss that came last year against the Purple Chiefs.

“Hopefully, we’ll be the ones to get that one this year,” Mishler said.
