AREA WRESTLING ACTION: Seventh-ranked Blue Demons sweep on Senior Night

ALBIA — The Albia wrestling team picked up three impressive wins Thursday night on their home mats. The Blue Demons, ranked seventh in Class 2A by The Predicament, scored wins over Moravia (54-6) and Pekin (52-27) while also earning a 60-18 victory over South Central Conference rival Clarke on Senior Night.

Three different Blue Demons wrestlers earned a pair of falls during the night, including junior Griffin Osing who moved closer to becoming the third Albia wrestler this season to win 100 career matches. Osing, ranked fourth in the state at 152, pinned Clarke’s Yahia Aly in 32 seconds and beat Pekin’s Scott Entsminger in 58 seconds to earn his 98th career win.

“Coming off a pretty good dual weekend last Saturday at Marshalltown, we were able to keep things headed in the right direction as we put three really solid duals together again,” Albia head wrestling coach Dave Wenger said. “We are beginning to gain some some momentum as a dual team. It is very pleasing knowing that we can count on several different wrestlers to fill in at spots where we had been open at earlier in the season.”

Wenger also commented on two seniors, Zach Davis and Christian Summers, who each picked up wins against the Mohawks. Summers scored a fall at 2:55 over Luke Huff at 2:55 while Davis earned a 2-1 overtime heavyweight decision against Dylan Conley.

“It was a very fitting Senior Night for those two young men. We are going to miss them tremendously,” Wenger said.

The Panthers left Albia with two dual wins on the night, beating Moravia 45-15 and Clarke 39-21. Tayte Schoff (138) and Austyn Vogel (145) scored back-to-back pins to put away the win over Clarke while Thomas Slaney’s pin at 182 and Trenton Conger’s 8-1 win over Dylan Conley at 220 were the only wins for Pekin against the Mohawks.

Briar Cochran had the top night for the Mohawks. The freshman moved to 21-2 on the season with a pin at 106 pounds in 3:12 against Clarke’s Landon Spurgin while moving up to 113 to beat Pekin’s Brandon Baayen 13-6.

Albia (12-5, 2-2) and Moravia (5-15) head to the Wayne Duals on Saturday while Pekin (9-3) will head to Wayland to compete at the WACO Tournament.
