DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls basketball team was handily defeated by eighth-ranked (Class 5A) Des Moines East 57-14 Thursday in a CIML Metro Conference game.

The Bulldogs’ offense got stuck in a rut in the first half, which allowed the Scarlets to build a 19-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Ottumwa continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter and trailed 31-3 at the half.

“We had 20 turnovers in the first half, so [East’s] pressure really bothered us, and we gave up way too many offensive rebounds in the first half,” Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson said.

The Bulldogs finished with 32 turnovers. While Patterson said he was impressed with the way his team contested the Scarlets’ first shots, he said the girls just weren’t able to come up with enough offensive rebounds in the first half.

Olivia Roark paced the Bulldogs with a team-high seven points and drilled the Bulldogs’ only 3-pointer. She also came up with all three of Ottumwa’s steals. Ottumwa’s Kristi Cary added four points off the bench while seeing more playing time than she has all season.

“Kristi Cary played really well,” Patterson said. “She did a good job penetrating gaps in their defense.”

Rachel Zingg chipped in three points and recorded the Bulldogs only block and Alexis Winn hauled in a team-high five rebounds.

Ottumwa (3-14, 2-8) will try to turn things around tonight when they take on another CIML Metro Conference opponent, Des Moines North, in the opener of a girl/boy doubleheader at Evans Middle School Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
