AREA BOYS BASKETBALL: Savages top Lynnville-Sully; move into SICL lead

LYNNVILLE — Vaclav Bujnoch helped lead Sigourney to an important road win in the battle for the South Iowa Cedar League title. Bujnoch, the area’s leading scorer, poured in a game-high 30 points to lead the Savages to a tough 49-45 win at Lynnville-Sully.

The win pushes the Savages ahead of the Hawks for the SICL lead. The Hawks, who have lost both matchups with Sigourney this year, still have two games left in the conference and could win at least a share of the league title with wins in both games.

“It was a huge road win for us. There were a couple of times the kids could have folded, but they really showed some incredible toughness,” Sigourney head coach Mitch Estlick said. “People were telling me we’ve never won there. It was a really important win for us to get if we want to win the conference.”

T.J. Cunningham scored 17 points to lead Lynnville-Sully while Connor Cullen added 13 for the Hawks. Brandon Stuhr scored 10 points for Sigourney (17-3, 17-2), who can clinch at least a share of the SICL title themselves with a win on Friday as the Savages wrap up league play at Tri-County.
