AMES — The Ottumwa boys basketball team got blasted by Ames 75-30 Tuesday night in a non-conference game.

The Bulldogs looked sharp in the opening minutes, going up 7-4 after Austin Walker buried a 3-pointers. But — in what has been an unwelcome theme this season — the Little Cyclones went on a 24-2 run that, barring a miraculous comeback, put the game out of reach for Ottumwa.

“These runs keep happening because we don’t make shots,” Ottumwa coach Chris Gravett said.

Gravett was happy with the way Ottumwa was running its offense, but he said the Bulldogs just couldn’t get any shots to fall.

“I thought our screening was pretty good, we hit some guys on some back cuts,” he said. “Whatever open shot they had they made and we just struggled to make shots.”

Carter Burns and Austin Walker provided Ottumwa with the overwhelming bulk of its offense. Burns spearheaded Ottumwa’s offensive attack with 16 points and Austin Walker added 11. Sam Straub and Justin Sloter scored 21 points each for the Little Cyclones.

Ottumwa (1-16, 1-9) plays host to CIML Metro Conference opponent Des Moines Roosevelt Friday.
