OTTUMWA —  Former Ottumwa star shortstop Paige Schreiner and the rest of the Indiana State softball team will open its season this weekend at the Cyclone Invitational at the Bergstrom Football Complex in Ames on the Iowa State University campus.

The Sycamores will be joined at the invite by host Iowa State, IPFW, North Dakota, Northern Colorado and South Dakota State.

Indiana State will start the invite at 9 a.m. Friday against IPFW and the Sycamores will play Northern Colorado later that morning at 11:15 a.m. On Saturday, they will face Northern Colorado in a rematch at 11 a.m. and North Dakota at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Indiana State will close out the invite against the Cyclones at 3 p.m.

Schreiner played a pivotal role in the Bulldogs highly successful season last summer — The Bulldogs finished 35-10 and finished sixth in at the state tournament. As a senior, the all-district and second-team all-state shortstop with a cannon-like arm ranked second on the team in RBI, 46; and home runs, six. And, thanks to her arm strength, she was able gun down base runners on plays that would have been sure hits if someone else was occupying the shortstop position.
