OTTUMWA — An 18-point scoring effort from Carter Burns wasn’t near enough to knock off Des Moines Roosevelt, as the Ottumwa Bulldogs fell to the Roughriders, 78-42, in CIML Metro action on Friday.

“We were getting the same shots, it’s just that theirs were going in and ours weren’t,” Ottumwa coach Chris Gravett said.

Chris Bennett was at the vanguard of the Roosevelt’s offensive attack, as the Bulldogs struggled to contain his potent inside-outside game.

Bennett, a tall guard-forward with a soft touch, did his best impersonation of NBA star Dirk Nowitski in the first half, as he buried a pair of treys that helped the Roughriders jump out to an early lead. Roosevelt’s Trey Burkhall paid homage to his namesake by drilling a 3 that put the Roughriders up 16-5 early in the first.

Burns, however, had the answer. After catching the ball inside, he got his defender to bite on a pump fake before making a slick move and kissing the ball off the glass for a bucket. Brok Hopwood was a whirlwind of activity early, burying a 3 in the opening minutes and relentlessly crashing the boards on both ends of the floor.

The Bulldogs, however, struggled to get defensive stops against Roosevelts’ uber-talented offense. By halftime, the Roughriders lead had ballooned to 42-23.

Ottumwa came out strong in the third quarter. Andrew Altfillisch found Burns inside for bucket and Austin Walker, who finished with 11, knocked down a 3-pointer from the left baseline. Despite the burst of offense, the Roughriders maintained their comfortable lead as Bennett continued to do damage from inside and outside the lane. The same pattern continued for the rest of the game and Roosevelt picked up the win.

Ottumwa (1-17, 1-10) plays Fairfield at home Tuesday.
